LOW BACK PAIN
Low back pain affects 60-80% of people during their life time and the 5th most common reason for visiting the GP. 23% of the adult population suffer from chronic low back pain.
Serious causes such as fracture, cancer, infection and cauda equina are thankfully rare, accounting for only 1-2% of all cases. And only 5-10% of people have back pain which is due to a specific cause such as a lumbar disc prolapse. Non-specific low back pain where no definite cause can be identified makes up 90% of all sufferers. Buttock and leg pain frequently accompanies low back pain.
